RECESS is pleased to announce the release of Up With Toys, a publication that weaves together writing and drawings by Anna Gray, Ryan Wilson Paulsen and their five-year-old son Calder. This is the third and final publication RECESS will release as part of the Moving Out series.
Deep within the woods there was an epic battle between squirrels, their allies, and humans. Fierce clashes erupted on trails and meadows. The city was destroyed and there were many injured and killed, but the scrappy squirrels and their animal friends survived, and the heart of the forest still beats with mystery.
Anna Gray + Ryan Wilson Paulsen are two people who work together as one artist. They use art as an extended form of study and a testing ground for ideas about language and the grammar of the social. Their pieces and projects have appeared in (and out) of institutions such as The Renaissance Society, The San Diego Museum of Art, Locust Projects, and on the pages of NOON Literary Annual. They live in Portland, Oregon, where they teach in the School of Art & Design at Portland State University and raise their 5-year-old son.
After losing our headquarters in 2014, RECESS began to explore the effects of rising rental and real estate costs on arts workers in major cities along the West Coast of US and Canada, as well as how the resulting nomadic lifestyles and dispersed communities shape artistic production.
With Moving Out, we intend to foster a new sense of regional identity by showcasing artists and projects that respond to these conditions both directly and indirectly. We also hope to build a model for what a curatorial program might look like in times of growing economic precarity and a lack of fixed resources.
Moving Out is supported in part by The Precipice Fund, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Arts, The Calligram Foundation, and the Regional Arts and Culture Council.
